With a passion for the great outdoors and looking for a new venture, we stumbled upon “Homestead” in July 2015. The property had not been lived in for two years and was pretty much derelict. You could see all the way through to the rafters from the ground floor, the large garden, and wooded pasture were completely over grown, littered with old machines, collapsed outbuildings and with nursery trees bursting out of their plastic pots.
The deeds for Homestead go back as far as 1680. The property was then known as “Carr House” and originally comprised 48 acres of land. Over the years, the property and its associated land and outbuildings have had many different uses including a Blacksmith’s shop, stables, a pig sty, pasture and gardens. In 1950 “Homestead” was created after the four bedroom dwelling house, a range of buildings, garden and 5.5 acres of grassland were sold at auction by Cundalls for the sum of £1,900.
We had a vision and have brought Homestead back to life using my husbands creative talents, local builders and free labour from our twin daughters during school holidays and weekends! It has taken more time than first imagined but we have had fun along the way and it has been a pleasure to see it restored into a fabulous holiday home.
